Immigrant & Refugee Stories – Book & Movie Discussion
October 2 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Join us for a book and movie discussion at 7:00 pm on October 2nd. You may either read the book or watch the movie in preparation for the discussion, or do both if you’d like!
Book: The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen – This book is a collection of perfectly formed stories written over a period of 20 years exploring questions of immigration, identity, love, and family. This book is available in various formats (physical copy, ebook, or audiobook) from wherever you get your books.
Movie: God Grew Tired of Us – This 2006 documentary film is about three of the “Lost Boys of Sudan”, a group of some 25,000 young men who have fled the wars in Sudan since the 1980s and their experiences as they move to the United States. This documentary would not be recommended for children to watch without a parent seeing it first. This is available on YouTube.
This conversation will be facilitated using respectful conversation guidelines which will be discussed prior to beginning our conversation.
The location is fully handicapped accessible. A mechanical door leads to a low-grade ramp into the building. There is an accessible bathroom across the hall from the room we will be in, and there are a variety of chair types available for a comfortable experience. We strive to make our event as accessible as possible, if we missed something, please let us know, we are happy to work towards making everyone physically comfortable.
